Sports Aid PDF Print E-mail

SportsAid, previously known as SportsAid Foundation (SAF), was founded in 1976. Its principle function was to raise funds from the private sector to provide financial assistance to Britain's amateur sportsmen and women. The aim was to help them prepare for competitions against better-funded, overseas athletes.

By working closely with the National Governing Bodies (NGB's), SportsAid has a well established and proven process ensuring that young sportsmen and women that require help, get it when they need it most.Sports Aid

On average each athlete spends nearly £5,000 per year on equipment, training, travelling and all of the other essentials that are required to compete at the top level.

Once each nomination is agreed a SportsAid grant is presented to each individual athlete directly, not to their NGB.

How to apply

SportsAid invites over 1,500 applications a year from up to 50 different sports. Applicants must be identified and nominated by their National Governing Bodies of Sport, based on their talent and sporting results. Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Performance: Member of the GB/England team or squad member.
  • Location: Live and train in England.
  • Age: between 12 & 18 years old, but we focus on the 12 - 16 age group.
  • Funding: should not be in receipt of any other funding such as TASS or Lottery; however, there is a possible exception for athletes that may be eligible for a top up award.

If you feel that you meet these criteria, contact England Netball to discuss your nomination for a SportsAid Award and request a SportsAid application.

Grant Application Process

All grant applications received by SportsAid follow a standard process of assessment. Governing Bodies must submit application forms to SportsAid before their designated deadline. Delays are likely for forms received after these dates:

  • WINDOW 1 - September
  • WINDOW 2 - January

All applications received by the SportsAid headquarters are divided into regions and distributed to the regional branches of SportsAid. The regional Grants Committee will assess all forms based on the SportsAid performance criteria. Applicants are not means tested. All applicants will be informed of the Committee's decision within 3 months of the application being received.
