Regional Excel Coach

Jo Binns

Jo is responsible for planning and leading the Excel Identification and development processes and structures across Netball South West. This work encompasses the management of the Regional Development Coaches. Jo's role involves supporting and developing athletes and coaches within the Regional Excel Pathway through:

• The implementation of high quality Excel Programmes
• Providing guidance and support for athletes
• Provide guidance and support for coaches
• Ensuring more accessible opportunities for athletes

Jo is the Head Coach for the Excel Academy in the South West, and Team Bath's Premier League side who were Division 1 League champions 2008/9.

Jo completed a degree in the Sport and Exercise (BSc) at the University of Bath. She spent the 2005/6year on a work placement as a Second Lieutenant Troop commander with the British Army, which included training at Sandhurst.

As a netball player Jo has progressed through the England Netball Talent Programme and gained 14 caps as a member of the National squad. Jo has represented England at the Netball Europe Championships, World Youth Championships (silver medal, 2005), World Championships and Test Series. She is currently playing for TeamBath in the Co-operative Netball Superleague.

Regional Development Coaches

Netball South West have a team of Full and Part time Regional Development Coaches who are responsible for a number of counties across the Region. The role of the Regional Development Coach team includes identifying and coaching potentially talented athletes who are primarily in County and Satellite Academies, and provide coach development and education support through delivering workshops and mentoring academy coaches.

Emily Flavell (Avon, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Dorset)

Emily started coaching with her local club in Essex, then moved to Bath to study for a Bachelors degree in Coach Education and Sports Development. She is a Level 3 Coach and currently acts as lead coach for the University of Bath 2nd team, lead coach for the Bath Talent and Performance Centre, and assistant coach for Team Bath NTL squad. Emily is also Vice Chairperson for TeamBath Netball Club and continues to play at regional level for the club.

Denise Ellis (Devon, Somerset)

Denise Started coaching at the age of 17 when she took on the task of coaching the WRNS Netball squad, as player coach in many Inter Service Competitions. Denise remained in the services for 10 years and then finally settled in Plymouth with her husband and family.

Denise has coached at various levels throughout her career formally as England U19 and U17 Head Coach. Denise also acted as Welsh National Coach going to the World Netball Championships in New Zealand in 2007. She is an Advanced Coach and also qualified as an A award umpire.

Denise completed a degree in BEd PE & Information Technology (Hons) at University College St Mark & St John and is currently working as the Regional Development Coach for Devon and Somerset, three days a week, her other two days are spent working as a Coach Mentor at UCP Marjon and as the Netball academy coach at Ivybridge Community College in South Devon.

Denise is currently involved as a National Excel programme Coach and also as Team Bath NTL Coach. She is also the lead Coach for her local club side Plymouth Marjon Netball Club who are currently in Regional League 1.

Gilly Salter

Gilly is responsible for establishing, developing and overseeing the Regional Scouting Programme. Gilly works with Regional Excel Coach, Jo Binns to select and nominate athletes to national screening. A key aspect of Gilly's role is to recruit, support and train county scouts across the South West and attend a range of tournaments/matches to observe and identify talented players.
