
Active Devon Sports Awards 2006
The awards were presented in May by Darren Westlake, Paralympic Silver Medallist at Tiverton.
Netball Award Winners:
Sue Gullick - Highly Commended in Senior Coach - Female
Sue has played an instrumental role as Head Coach for Plymouth Civil Service Netball Club in maintaining a high standard of Netball with many players attending South West Academy Training and the 1st team playing in the National Club's League. This high standard was recognised in the revalidation of their Gold Club Accreditation. In 2005, she was invited to sit on the Regional Education & Training Working Group and her work in Netball played a large part in her being awarded an MBE for Services to the Community at the end of the year.
Claire Grainger - Highly Commended in Young Coach - Female
In 2005 Claire gained her Level 2 Award. Her knowledge and confidence gained from this award enabled her to take her junior section to higher levels with the U11 squad winning the Junior League in 2005.
Lorraine Beel - Winner in Services to Sport - Official
Lorraine's commitment to officiating for East Devon netball has seen her rise through the ranks achieving her 'A' Award this February, qualifying her to national level and will be umpiring in the Premier One Division next season. Lorraine has been a role model to other umpires with more gaining their 'C' and 'B' awards through her expertise in making netball an enjoyable fair game! Lorraine has also completed her England Netball Umpire Tutor Award in order to bring new umpires into the game, In addition Lorraine's commitment and enthusiasm has seen a rise in the standards of playing and umpiring in North Devon.
Sandra Wood - Highly Commended in Services to Sport in Education
Sandra's school U19 netball team (Maynards) qualified for the National Schools Finals as runners up. Their success has been inspiration to all other year groups from under 8 upwards. Sandra has inspired and encouraged senior girls to play netball outside of school, many of whom have gone onto play netball for their county.
Kelly Hawkings - Highly Commended in Services to Sport - Official
After intially filling for an injured club umpire, Kelly has discovered a passion for umpiring which as since enthused others to pick up the whistle. Kelly has developed her umpiring skills by volunteering herself for matches and tournaments gaining her 'C' award qualification in December 2004. Her commitment to officiating on a regular basis has meant Carol Anne Netball Club is now in a position to enter a 5th team in the league. Kelly is looking to gain her 'B' award later this year.
