On Feb 17th players from the South and South West will have an opportunity to trial in Bath for National Screening in Sheffield on March 18th. Players have been recommended from the various Extension centres in the South and South West. Scouts also attended the National Schools Tournament at Millfield on Jan 27th. Some new talent was picked up and sent forward to the screening day.

From the Screening day on Feb 17th a group of young players will also be selected to play in a curtain raiser match prior to the Superleague Match on Sat Feb 24th. Two squads will be selected and they will have a training session on Friday Feb 23rd and play the following day.

The Talent and Performance group is working hard to set up systems in each county so that talented players have an opportunity to receive elite coaching opportunities. There are Extension Centres to Bath offering quality coaching inTruro College Cornwall, Marjons University Plymouth Gloucester University in Cheltenham and at the University of Bath. Players from the Dorset area can access Winchester Extension Centre. In April a new Extension Centre will be set up at Taunton School Somerset.

Jean Davies, NSW Director outlines below information about the Regional Talent Programme, TeamBath Futures, Scouting work and the planned talented young coaches programme.

Regional Talent Programme

"The Regional Talent Programme will run out of the County based Extension Centres.

The Extension Centres are the out posts of the Bath High Performance Netball Centre. This is where the talented netball players can receive quality coaching and hopefully progress on to the England Talent programme

Trials are taking place throughout September for places in the each centre. The Extension Centres are in Bristol, Bath, Gloucester, Plymouth Marjons Devon and Truro College Cornwall. Those in the Dorset area can access a south region extension centre in Winchester. Successful players will receive education on netball skills and tactical play, plus receive help and advice on all aspects of fitness training, mental preparation and nutrition.

Players are usually recommended for trials by national scouts, club coaches or teachers. Anyone who would like the opportunity of a trial or learning more about the extension centre programme should contact the following

BRISTOL, BATH and WINCHESTER - Lyn Gunson L.Gunson@bath.ac.uk

GLOUCESTER - Gilly Salter gillysalter@hotmail.com

PLYMOUTH - Denise Ellis dennetball@blueyonder.co.uk

TRURO - Jean Davies davnetball@aol.com

Selected players from the extension centres will have the opportunity for a Regional Screening Day on Feb 17th 2007 at the Sports Training Village in Bath. The top players will be selected for National Screening and the opportunity of a place in the England Talent programme."

TeamBath Futures

"Trials will be taking place on Sept 7th 2006 for a feeder group to the Team Bath Superleague Squad. This will be an U21 group and will give talented players an opportunity for high quality training and match play. The group will be called Team Bath Futures. Trials will take place between 6-9pm at the Sports Training Village, Bath.

Later in the season there will be opportunities for selected younger players from the Extension centres to receive coaching and match play opportunity in Bath. The first of these sessions will be on Oct 27th and 28th 2006 and will be aimed at the U17 age group. This group of players will be called Team Bath Development Group. They will hopefully have playing opportunity against Wales and the South Region."

Scouting

"The Talent and Performance group will be developing the regional scouting programme this season. Opportunities for training scouts will be devised around Regional Events such as Regional Screening and possibly the Regional National Schools Tournament. It is hoped that County scouts will attend local county tournaments and recommend players to extension centres. The first step to becoming a scout is attending a Performance Standard Workshop. Two attempts to run such a course in Gloucester have failed due to lack of interest. It is intended to get the PSW up and running in other parts of the region this year, dates and venues have yet to be finalised."

Talented Coach Programme

"The South West has many talented coaches already but it is hoped that a programme for developing young talented coaches will be introduced this year. In the same way that the talented umpire programme has evolved around Team Bath it is intended to invite talented coaches in to training sessions during the year and possibly give them bench opportunities at Team Bath Futures and Team Bath Development Squadsí matches. It is hoped that these talented coaches will then work in local Extension Centres, County and Satellite Academies."
