On 21st June 2009, NSW held its 4th annual Goalden Globe Awards at the beautiful venue of Dillington House situated in the heart of Somerset. With 3 new categories introduced this year 10 awards were up for the taking. We were very excited to have received nominations for each category from all over the region. The judging panel was extremely impressed with the high standard of nominations that they received and although the choice was difficult chose 10 very worthy, respective category winners.

NSW Muriel McNally Award

Julie Dyer (Avon)

Julie DyerThis award is presented to a volunteer who has made a notable contribution to the development of netball at grass roots level over a significant period of time.

Julie has been instrumental in taking the Avon senior league from its small and humble beginnings of three divisions evolving it to a league which now consists of 11 divisions boasting 110 team plus. It is in large part due to Julie's commitment and enthusiasm that the county itself is able to provide plentiful levels of competitive opportunities for participation. Julie has also established and organises summer tournaments, summer leagues and the floodlit league to encourage participation outside of formal league structures. Actively involved in the junior section of her club, Mangotsfield NC, Julie ensures all members engage in quality and enjoyable sessions. In addition to these roles Julie co founded the Avon mini league which provides a club for new young players to feed into from High 5 tournaments maintaining participation. Julie has an unwavering commitment to the game and is always striving for better opportunities for all.

NSW Rose Award

Danny Neill (Dorset)

Danny NeillThis award is made annually to a volunteer or organisation that has made an outstanding contribution to England Netball by promoting and developing netball to a wider audience.

Danny gives an enormous amount of his free time towards the development of officiating at all levels across the region. He truly is a remarkable volunteer. His dedication to this discipline has seen him pioneer and implement the South West's mentoring programme for Talented Young Umpires the first programme of its kind in the United Kingdom. The Talented Young Umpire Programme (TYUP) has been designed to nurture those young umpires who demonstrate promise and potential to develop into great umpires.

Now in its second year the TYUP has grown from strength to strength with this year alone producing three members whom of which have successfully obtained their Umpire B Award qualification. Danny actively works with all TYUP umpires and mentors to ensure they receive plentiful training and development opportunities at the appropriate level of competition to aid their progression in the programme.

Not only has Danny's dedication and commitment to the TYUP seen young umpires excel in achieving their award qualifications but the reputation of the programme he has built shines bright and is recognised not only nationally but now internationally. This year a selection of umpires from the TYUP were invited to officiate at the 2009 Inter Gulf Championships in Bahrain. In temperatures of over 30 degrees 8 members of the programme and 2 mentors took part in this tournament and won the respect of everyone there.

The TYUP is Danny's primary project however he also:

  • Acts as the umpiring lead for Netball South West in the development of umpires involved in Regional Competition
  • Organises table officials for TeamBath Cooperative Netball Super League matches (many of whom are U18 umpires nurtured through the TYUP)
  • Co Chair's the Education and Training Working Group for the SW having a hand in the successful running of a comprehensive programme for umpire development.

 

Danny leads by example not only in the hours he devotes but also the quality of his work and his attention to detail. He always delivers far in excess of what is expected of a volunteer and this impact's on those who work alongside him.

NSW Young Volunteer Award

Ivy Sherwood (Avon)

Ivy SherwoodThis award is presented to a young person who has volunteered their time and expertise for a minimum period of two years to help others enjoy netball.

Ivy is well known within the Netball community as being a very positive and keen leader. This is all credit to the obvious enjoyment she gets from coaching, umpiring and helping others. Her can do attitude and productive outlook has gained her work in local primary schools delivering Netball after school, without Ivy these sessions would not be happening. Not only does Ivy engage with primary schools she also outreaches to secondary and special schools as well. Always keen to gain more experience Ivy has achieved her CSLA and HSLA, she also shadows a Level 3 coach at TeamBath NC to gain new and fresh ideas/knowledge and is always keen to ask questions. At 19 years of age Ivy is contributing an enormous amount of her time to developing Netball so others can enjoy our game - she is an extremely valued member.

NSW Coach Award

Charlotte Mitchell (Somerset)

Charlotte MitchellCoaches play a crucial role in the development of netball players, and this new awardrecognises the commitment and achievements of a netball coach who has made anoutstanding contribution over the last 12 months.

Her ability to inspire and motivate athletes has seen Charlotte develop into a well respected and exceptional coach. When the 'old' County structures were in place Charlotte was Somerset's Head Coach, however now structures are changing Charlotte has committed to ensuring her knowledge and practices follow suit. She has been instrumental in setting up the newly established Talent and Performance (T&P) Centre in Taunton. Working alongside the Regional Development Coach, initially, she has now become one of the centres Head Coaches. Being the dedicated coach that she is, Charlotte has provided these athletes the opportunity to attend Regional screening and training weekends to aid their development.

Charlotte is a very open, approachable and inspirational coach, providing valuable opinions and advice to all. Not only is Charlotte committed to developing her own skills and knowledge but also that of other coaches. She regularly attends workshops and courses and feeds back these experiences in an attempt to up skill others and ensure their knowledge is as current as her own, creating unity in delivery. Her ability to deliver sessions to a wide and diverse audience is fantastic, ranging from Back to Netball Sessions to those for her own club, Galmington NC, to County sessions Charlotte is involved with them all, a truly first class coach.

NSW Grassroots Coach Award

Linda Andrews (Jersey)

Linda AndrewsThis Award recognises the outstanding contribution of a coach who gets more people engaging, growing and staying in netball through high quality coaching.

Linda's long standing involvement in coaching has been well documented in Jersey. Convent NC, which Linda coaches, has been successive champions or runners up for the past 10 years. Not only does Linda know how to acquire the best from her players she also encourages them to take up source other areas of development. As Jersey is separated from the mainland Linda has been the main driving force in getting the U16's to participated in the SW U16 Regional League and is continually looking for new ways to ‘expose' the Jersey youngsters to English opposition. She is constantly aware of the physical development of young players who are under her coaching care with their health and fitness being of utmost importance. She encourages ‘respect' amongst fellow team members, for the opposition and for the officials.

NSW Officials Award

Denise Snow (Avon)

Denise SnowThe Officials Award is presented to an individual who has given their time anddemonstrated a high level of commitment to officiating in netball.

Denise spends a significant amount of time improving the standard of umpiring within Avon through a variety of methods: Organising courses; Co-ordinating the testing of new umpires; Dealing with various issues; and ensuring standards remain high by reviewing a mandatory implemented feedback system from all leagues in the county. In addition she spends time with mentees, observes and provides feedback to umpires, is a table official at the majority if not all Superleague fixtures held in Bath and continues to umpire in a multitude of leagues. There is no question about Denise's commitment and dedication for it is second to none, she is positive, approachable and an outstanding individual, selflessly giving her time to help others progress whilst ensuring the best services are available to all umpires in Avon.

NSW Nextgen Award sponsored by Long Tall Sally

Titans Netball Club (Devon)

Titans Netball ClubThis award is presented to an organisation (e.g. club, county, school or university) which has made an outstanding contribution to developing, training and supporting their new and young netball volunteers.

Titans Netball Club thrives on achieving the best potential from all volunteers, especially from their younger membership. The club has a dedicated officer who establishes volunteer aspirations to ensure the best opportunities for development are on offer. Each week, through a reputable mentoring scheme, experienced umpires support the clubs younger umpires providing them with guidance and encouragement. Three of the clubs younger members are on Netball South West's TYUP and two of the clubs experienced umpires are also involved in the programme as mentors to the girls. Not only does the club have the ability to provide in house support they also reach out to other clubs.

The club was recognised by England Netball this year and asked to participate within a showcase game to promote High 5 Netball to a panel for the promotion of sport in Schools. This was an enjoyable experience by all involved, one in which the club was proud to be a part of. As well as providing a comprehensive support model for umpires the club also houses a strong support network for developing coaches. Umpire development has seen immense progression over the past 12 months with the achievement of one B Award qualification and a number of C Award qualifications. This success shows the club provides a stable and supportive network of appropriate personnel who are able to drive forward volunteer development with enthusiasm and a smile.

NSW Community Volunteer Award

Natasha Howard (Cornwall)

Natasha HowardThis awardis made to a volunteer who has made a notable contribution to the developmentof netball within the community and whose involvement in netball began outsidethe traditional network of affiliated club/school.

Natasha is Cornwall's Netball Development Officer but her commitment to the sport exceeds that of the one day a week she is employed. In a voluntary capacity Natasha occupy's many roles ranging from being a member on the County Committee to being one of the counties most respected Satellite Academy Coaches. Natasha leads by example not only in the number hours she devotes but also the commitment and quality of her work.

Acting as a coach within the Satellite Academy she pays great attention to all athletes and coaches, ensuring those involved receive appropriate and adequate training tailored to their needs. Acting as a coach to the athletes and a mentor to the other coaches involved in the programme Natasha always makes time for everyone, treating them equally, fairly and with due care and consideration. Natasha has been instrumental in helping Cornwall's development programme flourish from its humble beginnings to its now plentiful appearance boasting six satellite academies.

On the committee Natasha is a driving force, always looking for new ways to improve the services the committee provides and opportunities available for Cornwall's Netball community. She has tremendous loyalty to the game and to Cornwall. She is such a positive and charismatic individual and always has a smile on her face. Natasha truly is an extremely valued member.

NSW Mary Bulloch Administrator Award

Pat Salter (Wiltshire)

Pat SalterThe Mary Bulloch Administrator Award is presented to a volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to the development of netball at any level by way of administration.

Pat has been heavily involved with administrative duties for a number of years in a variety of roles. Carrying out these responsibilities takes an enormous amount of time and organisation thus involving a lot of planning. Pat is capable of ‘getting things done' meaning she displays excellent efficiency in producing quality. Pat has had a significant impact on the increase of quality umpires in Wiltshire, helping others realise their potential for development. She is a good role model in her punctuality, efficiency, commitment and exuberance for the game.

NSW Netball Teacher Award

Giselle Gray (Dorset)

Giselle GrayTeachers play a crucial role in introducing and inspiring players to the game of netball and many of them achieve this by volunteering their 'out of school' time.

Giselle is a teacher at Dumpton School in Wimborne, Dorset. Her energy and enthusiasm has enabled students to not only play at numerous events and tournaments but she has also organised umpiring courses whereby year seven players (U12's) have then become umpires at U11's events and at adult charity matches. Senior players at school have been mentored by Giselle to help coach junior players. Non specialists staff have been supported and mentored by Giselle and are now coaching the school U11's team. School trips have been organised to watch the South West Super league Team Bath play. Then on a Sunday Giselle helps the local Junior Club (Canford Netball Club). Her other volunteer roles include Treasurer to Dorset Schools NA and County Coaching Secretary for East Dorset. Then when she is not doing all of the above she manages to play and captain her team in the local Poole League.
